A rare and beautiful sight from mainland Australia is
the Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights. Not as well
documented as it's northern counterpart, the Aurora
Borealis, this amazing display nevertheless caused quite
a stir in 2001. This image, taken at the Briars, clearly
shows the rays of pink that follow the Earths magnetic
lines, with the greenish glow illuminating the sky
beyond the clouds. |

This montage of images shows the path
Venus took across the Sun, from no effect to well within
the solar disc. To give you an idea of time, first
contact (second shot from left) to second contact
(fourth from right) was approx. 18 minutes. |

Eastern Australia saw the initial stages
of the transit only; at sunset Venus was almost halfway
across the sun. Just before it went down, cloud rolled
in and actually enhanced this image of an oblate sun
with Venus still showing as a black dot. |
