MPAS Meeting May 2024

Society monthly meeting recorded on 20240515 at The Briars Mount Martha Observatory.

Meeting introduction was by the President, Dr. Peter Skilton. Vice President, Chris Kostokanellis, then presented the AstroMoPho Astronomy Photographic challenge for the month, followed by Committee member, Dr. Guido Tack, with the Sky for the Month. There were numerous local images and videos from members of the prominent Aurora Australis display recently on 11-May-2024.

The main video was then shown on the topic of “Space Storms in the Upper Atmosphere and Ionosphere”, presented by Dr. Stan Solomon, Senior Atmospheric Scientist and Section Head of Geospace Frontiers, High Altitude Observatory, National Centre for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado. Peter Skilton then presented the following science video: “Why Apollo Flew in a Figure 8”, courtesy of Amy Shira Teitel, Space Historian, courtesy of the Vintage Space channel. Amy visited the observatory at The Briars in person in August 2016 during National Science Week.
