View the Moon, planets and the stars through our telescopes!
Our popular Public Stargazing Nights start at 8:00pm on the first Friday of each month at the Mt Martha Observatory.
This is your chance to view the Moon, planets like Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, interesting stars and clusters as well as bright satellite and Space Station passes, all with a wide array of telescopes supplied by our members.

MPAS has a long history of introducing schools and community groups to the wonders of the night sky. In recent years, we have endeavoured to give the public the opportunity to view these same treasures at our monthly Stargazing Nights.
We also show a variety of multimedia presentations to spark your interest! Free light refreshments are provided as well.
These nights are held regardless of the weather, with an extended presentation if viewing is not possible.
COVID-safe public stargazing
We are committed to providing a safe environment for everyone.
- If you feel sick or have any COVID-19 symptoms, please do not come to the Briars.
- Group size is limited and pre-booking is required.
- Face masks are no longer required, but you are of course welcome to wear a mask if you wish to do so.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the format of the Public Stargazing Night?
The night usually starts with a presentation, followed by the viewing. In the summer months, it’s still daylight when we start so it has to be this way. In the winter, viewing can also be done before the presentation: if a large number attend we can also split into two groups, one viewing while the other sees the show, then swapping over.
Can I bring my kids?
Absolutely! Even the littlies get a thrill from looking through a telescope. The presentations are aimed at a general audience but seem to keep the attention of most children with animation, sound and video. Just remember to keep an eye on them around expensive equipment. All Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent / guardian.
What if it’s CANCELLED?
If we have to cancel a public night due to public health restrictions (such as a lockdown) we will offer the choice of a refund or moving your booking to a later date.
What if it’s Raining/cloudy/too cold?
We never cancel a public night due to the weather. Sounds strange, but it’s easier for us to attend and at least do the presentation than try and decide if we should cancel, then attempt to contact everyone. If it’s pouring rain you can still come along for the show and return for free on the following Public Night midway through the evening at 9pm.
